View from my Couch - Monday Night

A collection of my thoughts on the games that I watch.....

Made the switch from Kentucky/Miami Ohio - to Jacksonville at Florida State. I was thinking I'd rather see this game - and when DIRECTV blacked out the UK game I was convinced.

College Hoops

Jacksonville @ Florida State
Always like to get a chance to watch Cliff Warren's bunch at Jacksonville. The former Mount point guard has done a nice job of turning the Dolphin program around, and he'll once again be one of the choices to lead his team to the tourney. It's the opener for both teams tonight. Warren won the Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year last year, as JU won the A-Sun for the first time ever.

Incidentally, Warren might be my wife's all-time favorite Mountaineer. He was the point guard, a long time ago, back during our courting (we'll call it that since this post is about basketball) stage and I routinely took her to games. As long as we made it to Stavros afterwards she was happy. #5 from Paint Branch High was a good guard for the Mount and has worked his way through the coaching ranks. He was on Jim Phelan's staff at the Mount, went to Siena and then Georgia Tech with Paul Hewitt before getting this job

Talked about that mid-major formula for winning games like this on the road in last night's post. JU having trouble with two of those areas early. They are 0-5 from behind the arc and have given up four second chance points as they trail 14-6 early.

If you thought the Mount's schedule was tough. Check out the Dolphins. They only play at home once before the New Year. That is against Florida. Road trips to Cal, South Carolina and Orlando for the UCF Holiday Festival follow this one.

Florida State is one of those teams creating a buzz around the ACC. And they are showing why here early scoring 14 straight to take control......Jacksonville is picked to win the A-Sun. Ahead of teams such as Mercer (which beat Bryant over the weekend), Lipscomb, and Belmont (which nearly upset Duke at the Verizon Center in the tourney two years ago).....Solomon Alabi has scored 11 early points, taking advantage of his talents inside for the 'Noles.

It has gotten ugly in Tallahassee. FSU has turned up the defensive pressure and its led to some steals and run outs. A Warren timeout stopped the bleeding momentarily but JU trails 29-11....

Florida State won the game 87-61

Eastern Washington at Washington State

Eastern has jumped out to an early 13-7 lead two media timeouts in.

They just showed a graphic that Washington State has the second best overall record in the PAC-10 the last 3 seasons, behind only UCLA. But Tony Bennett, the coach behind that, has left for Virginia.....The Cavs lost by 17 to South Florida tonight....Eastern Washington runs this high Princeton screening offense. It is giving Wash State trouble early. But EWU is also getting to the offensive glass, which is leading to some second chance points....Point of emphasis in college basketball this year, is the block/charge call, that the defender under the basket will be a block. Just saw it there.....This game is still a six point Eagle lead as they head to the next break. It is still early, but this has the feeling that it is going to be close the whole way.

Washington State won the game 67-61

NFL

Ravens @ Browns

The Ravens have scored twice in 17 seconds to make it a 13-0 game in Cleveland.....Man, Ron Jaworski really bothers me....Let's see how the Browns respond.....Another tipped ball and another interception. Pass a little behind the receiver......But this game is about to be over.....A nice job by the Browns defense to hold the Ravens to a field goal, although a false start starting out, sure helped....Still down 16-0 you really have to think that the Browns can't score that many anyhow.

The Ravens won the game 16-0

Way to make me feel old... it doesn't seem that long ago that I was at The Mount watching Cliff play
