Atupem named Irish Player of the Week

Eurobasket.com has nameed Shawn Atupem the Irish player of the week for his 30-point 5 rebound 2 assist performance in this week's play overseas. Atupem's effort helped lead his UCC Demons to a 72-58 win over UL Eagles in the Irish SuperLeague.

Atupem who finished a four year career at the Mount last season is enjoying great success in his debut season overseas. He leads the league in scoring at 27.0 points per game, his 7.8 rebounds per outing is 4th best and he's shooting nearly 58% from the floor.

  1. Will someone ask Shawn (and the other Mountaineers like Kelly who are having success) why they think they are far more productive than they were here? This is a serious question. There must be something we can learn.

  2. Harry- Well bud, I can only say this: at least Kels and Shawn didnt get kicked off the team.

  3. I'm guessing it has something to do with the level of competition. I don't think either Ireland's or Iceland's leagues are that high up in the Euroleague pecking order.

  4. JPFoley, you couldn't be more right. They are playing at a pretty low level. Maybe D3 in the US. This isn't a knock on them though. I would love to be playing basketball in Ireland!

  5. Hey John, I highly doubt your assessment of D3 level. They have some good players off BCS teams over there. Granted most of them on each team are not Americans, but players like Martin Zeno of Texas Tech do not exude a D3 level. John, am I going to see you at the Savannah game? I could give you a tour around if you come. Savannah is an awesome place too!

  6. Hi Richard. While there are some stand-out US players, their numbers are limited by league rules. When you look at the overall mix of talent including the Irish players, the league has been described as similar in talent to high quality D3. It's not a knock on Shawn. He was a heck of a player for the Mount but just look at his stats. The Mount plays in one of the lower D1 conferences in the nation and Shawn averaged about 11 pts. per game. He is now averaging 25+. Again, it's no knock. I'm sure that his success will enable him to move up into better leagues in different countries resulting in him earning more. By the way, this might be a different John than you think.

  7. Richard, the "John" who has been on this post with you is not me - I am the old doc and Mount grad that met you and your wife at a game last year.
