Headlines from 20 years ago

On this date 20 years ago the Mount beat Georgia Tech 71-69 at the Omni in Atlanta.
Here were some of the national headlines from the nation's papers the next day.....

Georgia Tech Upset By Whom?  - LA Times

Mount St. Mary's Stuns No. 21 Ga. Tech At Buzzer - Sun Sentinel

Mount St. Mary's Upsets Georgia Tech - The Bryan Times

Mount St. Mary's Stuns Georgia Tech - Philly.com

If you know the true story behind Rick Barry, the Mount and Coach Jim Phelan, you'll also find it ironic that Barry's son Drew played for the Jackets.

Up next for UW men’s basketball: Mount St. Mary’s | The Seattle Times:

This article has a few errors and a few typos but it does give the Mount more respect than they are used to. Hopefully, UW is having as much trouble as Percy Allen is getting back into gear after their trip to China.

The Mount gets better with class of 2016 signings

The Mount, the coaches pick to win the Northeast Conference in 2015-16, added to it's arsenal with 3 high school seniors who will join the team in the fall of 2016. The trio, 6-5 Miles Wilson of Mt St. Joseph, 6-10 Ryan Gomes of Friends School, and 6-9 Jack Vukelich of Trinity, all bring the required elements to enhance Mount Mayhem as the system has been known since Jamion Christian took over after the 2012 season.

All three were identified early in the process with Vukelich and Wilson committing before the end of their junior years and Gomes announced his intentions over the summer. All three continued to be pursued by other suitors but locked in their commitments signing letters of intent earlier this week.

Not only does the group bring size and length to fit Christian's preferred playing style, but it also signals his desire to recruit the top players. Gomes is from nearby Westminster, Wilson from Reistertown, and Vukelich from Mechanicsburg, PA just a quick trip of Route 15, which intersects the Mount campus. The players three hometowns are a combined 101 miles from the Mount.

Wilson has drawn a lot of praise over the summer and recent months amongst the recruiting community.Hoopseen.com identified him as the NEC's top signing and the twittersphere had him as one of, if not the top steal in the area on signing day. The 6-5 Wilson is a scorer and gets his points in a variety of ways. He averaged double digits during his junior campaign at Mt. St. Joe's. Wilson will join former Mt/ St. Joe's player Bryce Thurston at the Mount. I believe the last time a pair from Mt. St. Joseph was on the roster was with John Miller and Alex Watson back in the late eighties.

Gomes is a true post center who scored 12.1 points per game (per Baltimore Sun) pulled down double digit rebounds (per mountathletics.com) as a junior at Friends School. He also blocked 3 shots a game and will be an intimidating factor at the back of the zone and runs the floor well for someone of his size.

There aren't a lot of 6-9 players in the NEC who can score both inside and out, but Vukelich has that ability. He averaged 8 points a game for the Shamrocks, one of the mid-state's top programs.

Also eligible next year will be transfer Greg Alexander, 6-4 from Hampton, VA and late of East Carolina University.

With 7-0 Taylor Danaher and 6-7 Greg Graves departing after this season, the Mount needed to replace some size. They certainly did that with this class and the roster will have 7 players 6-6 or better.

Terps Ready For Highly Touted Season

Terps Ready For Highly Touted Season:
From Maryland Blog Pressbox DC

"Maryland won't be pressured by Mount St. Mary's. The final score bears watching, though. If the Terps simply win by 10 or 20 points, then Turgeon is still testing combinations. If Maryland wins by 30 or more, Turgeon has decided his rotation and lets the reserves get their minutes, too."

That's bulletin board stuff.

The Mount lost to Maryland by 3 on its last visit to Xfinity. Roger Ayers was the MVP if I recall. That was an 8-21 Mount team. A lot of growth by both teams since then. Terps are poised for a big year. But that's zero respect. Come on.

Why does this make me think of Sheboygan?

Because as everyone knows (or can at least look up on Google Maps) Sheboygan is slapped between Green Bay and Milwaukee - just as the Mount is here.

#163 - A first four participant and 63 slots ahead of anyone else in the NEC according to Sports Illustrated.

Let's jump it up

Mount, Hood hope to make exhibition a tradition | Collegiate | fredericknewspost.com

Here's a recap of last night's game and how the scrimmage came together. I love the idea. In fact, have said for years the Mount should play Gettysburg in preseason exhibition. But Hood makes more sense.

And I really like playing Randolph-Macon and opening that up to the public. Getting to play those old D2 rivals is cool. Catholic, Philadelphia Textile now Philadelphia U, or McDaniel (formerly Western Maryland) along with Gettysburg would be a few other old time rivals worth playing.

Anybody have any better ideas, games you'd like to see?

Expectations high at the Mount as basketball practice begins | Collegiate | fredericknewspost.com

Frederick News Post's Greg Swatek looks at the team. Found it a bit odd that he called the team small. With 8 players better than 6-5, and 6 6-7 or taller, it makes me think its one of the bigger teams in Mount history.

Anyways, excited to see this team and watch it grow this season.

Cummings holds an offer from Cornell and his Twitter feed shows pictures from a recent visit to Indiana. He also has interest from Pitt, Duquesne and Princeton.

As the video shows below he is a big talent and he would fit perfectly into the Mount Mayhem style.

Top 125 player Nik Sherod to visit The Mount

Shooting guard Nik Sherod of Richmond Virginia has listed the Mount as one of three schools he will take an official visit to before he makes his final decision.

Sherod who is entering his senior season at St. Christopher's in Richmond is already the school's all-time leading scorer. He accomplished that feat in the season opener of his junior campaign when he dumped in 42 points to surpass the record,

In a recent article at theleftbench.com, Sherod said he has 16 offers and he lists the Mount as one of the teams recruiting him the hardest.

Sherod's father played college hoops at Old Dominion and his grandfather played at Virginia Commonwealth. Both won games in the NCAA Tournament and Sherod says that he wants to continue that family tradition. With the Mount housing all the talent it already does on campus, it appears that goal would be accomplished if he chooses Mount Mayhem.

The Mount already has commitments for 2016 from Jack Vukelich, Miles Wilson and most recently Ryan Gomes.

Sherod would be a great addition to what is already a strong class.
