Robert Burke has been named head basketball coach at Mt. St. Mary's it was announced on the school's athletic web sit just after 5pm today.
Burke who spent the last year at American University, was also part of John Thompson III's staff at Georgetown and Princeton. In addition, he has been an assistant at Loyola Marymount, UMBC and Siena.
Burke was selected from a rumored group of four finalists after a more than 2 1/2 week search to find a successor to Milan Brown, who left to be the head coach at Holy Cross.

Burke is highly thought of throughout the basketball community and drew recommendations from among others, Thompson and former Mount guard and Jacksonville head coach Cliff Warren.

Now I see RMU sources favoring a young assistant as their new coach. I can't help but think Burke's resume made him a good choice for us.
ReplyDeleteRaff I read from Goodman that Burke got fired from Georgetown. Is that incorrect considering he got a recommendation from JTIII?
ReplyDeleteDan - I was told that everything checked out very highly on Burke - that he was recommended by JTIII and Cliff Warren among others.
ReplyDeleteNot sure about the circumstances at Georgetown at the end. Although, it did seem strange to go from Georgetown to American. I believe he was a finalist for the Holy Cross job last year as well. Maybe it had something to do with his long-term commitment to the program. And maybe it had nothing to do with JTIII and was a forced move from above.
I wonder if Burke was the only one they could afford. I have heard that the Mount is pretty cheap as far a employment goes. i am worried about this G'town dismissal, but maybe since John T still likes him, we could have a good connection and get some DC boys as recruits.
