Fun night at the ARCC
Even in defeat it was a fun game. A great atmosphere and worth the price of admission. Made me want to go back - and I'm hoping others feel the same way.
Of course, we won't get that chance until November with what will likely be a team that looks very different in a lot of ways. With the transfers that have been sitting out this year and the incoming freshman, plus a new coach it will be a different Mount team. I expect that a lot of the excitement from last night will carry over.
The Mount needs a miracle now to make the NEC tournament. Two wins on the road at Central Connecticut and Bryant and a pair of losses for Sacred Heart in its home building. The Pioneers play Robert Morris and lowly St. Francis PA.
So pretty soon we can start looking to next year.
The article on last night's game showed that Matt Henry wasn't confident that the decisions he made down the stretch were the right ones. Couple that with the fact that his team didn't respond and make the same types of plays that they had made in building the nine point lead to begin with - translates into the disappointing loss. The game ended with a 17-6 Monmouth run.
Many will question Henry's decision to not call timeout down two with the ball after two missed Monmouth free throws late. But let's be honest, that's a coin flip. If Castellanos' runner goes - nobody would have noticed. But the Mount did need a better shot at that time. They seemed unpoised and hurried when there was more time than they wanted to believe. All of a sudden they were looking to the bench. I blame that on Robert Burke more than anything.
Where I'll question Henry was with the two substitutions right around the 4-minute mark. Kristijan Krajina had a bad night. And to insert him for Raven Barber at the time, especially with the type of night Barber was having was really questionable. To also pull your starting point guard - and the only guy who has seen significant minutes at the spot all season, for a young green freshman at the time made little to no sense. If you want to find fault with Henry, I think you start right there.
Anyhow, as I said it was an enjoyable night at the Mount. A great night to honor the '62 National Champs. I found one thing especially true about the halftime ceremony. The statement that "Behind every great team there is a great coach."
We need to find that again.

Strong words from King Rice
“I think people are scared because Mount could catch us but they have not won four games in a row the whole season.”
“And people think they’re going to do it the last four games of the year when their coach just got put on leave? Not going to happen.’’
Good catch Onions. Maybe the guy is back on the silly juice.

I wanted to root for Robert Burke....
but he made it so hard.
His time was short at the Mount, maybe too short to really know if he could run a productive Division I basketball program. Or maybe too long. As now we're digging out of a hole that took 2 short years to dig but might take many many more to build a ladder big enough to get out of.
So now that this era is over - and the next era has begun. (Matt Henry said after last night's game that he was informed he'd coach the rest of this season). I, and a lot of other Mount fans are excited again. We're excited that our team, that seemed to be held captive for the last 22 months is ours again.
And I sensed that the players felt that way too. Julian Norfleet didn't exactly come right out and say it. But his quote of “It can definitely carry over with this team. We can play hard and have fun and play loose.”, definitely had me thinking that the players were happy the change was made. How much easier is it to make a 20 foot jump shot when you're playing loose and having fun?
Now I don't want to go right out and say that beating FDU by 17 after beating them by 19 the first time around signals the end of the down time. There is still a lot of work to be done. And time will tell if that work is done by Matt Henry or some other individual.
But for now, the first night was a good one. And there is a sense of excitement about things again.

Burke: The Latest
Talked to a lot of folks this morning about this. Seems like it shocked and surprised a lot of people. Also seems like the team performance on the court is not the problem at the root of the eventual dismissal/resignation of Robert Burke.
I know that is brief and I know there isn't a lot of true content there, but it's about the best I can do at the moment.
Perhaps Lynne Phelan-Robinson's press conference will shed more light. Or perhaps not.
I'm going to refrain from starting a list of names I think should be considered as a replacement until after this year's team's season has been decided. I think the players deserve that respect to allow them to focus on the task at hand of making the playoffs.

Following Up on the Burke situation
Folks, not much has changed since last night, at least in what I've been told.
The eveningsun.com is reporting that the Mount will address the issue further at a press conference before tonight's game.
But....
I don't expect to ever see Robert Burke on the Mount bench again. The chances start with zero and end with percent.
Sort of mixed feelings from me on this one. I don't think we ever got to really see if Robert Burke's vision of a basketball program and the players that he wanted to employ would work at this level. Yet, I'm pretty anxious to see if this change puts a little charge and excitement back within the basketball program. That element has definitely been lacking in recent days, months, .... However, I don't believe that was the culprit for Burke's demise.
Either way the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights are in town tonight and the players have to put this behind them.
Young (at least he looks that way) Coach Matt Henry will get the chance to try to lead this team into the playoffs. They probably need four wins to do so. Let's see how everybody responds.

Thoughts from last night
- When the Mount trailed at halftime, I thought I was never going to see them win again. I had decided not to post until they broke the personal 9 game losing streak I was on, and began to think I may never post again.
- Great shooting effort from Kelvin Parker. I do think he's going to get better as time goes on and he's certainly playing at a pretty high level for a freshman anyhow.
- I really liked the energy that Jacolby Wells brought in the second half. Thought he made a couple plays that don't show up on the stat sheet that were vital.
- Nice performance from Josh Castellanos. Seemed to play with a lot more confidence than the last time I saw him. Looks like he might becoming the leader.
- No energy the first half was really disappointing. But the second half play made up for it.
- Team has progressively been getting better. Hasn't gotten the results to show for it, maybe that is about to change. But the next three will be tough.

Good win
A nice win at home for the Mount tonight. Big second half performance from Kelvin Parker to fuel the rally.
