Ken Horton Named Captain of 2011-12 CCSU Men's Basketball Team

Northeast Conference - Ken Horton Named Captain of 2011-12 CCSU Men's Basketball Team

Horton figures to be one of the top players in the NEC again this year. Not saying much when he was named NEC Player of the Year last year.

To have that type of returning player should make Central one of the top teams in the ever-improving NEC this season.

Dunbar's Wallace to High Point

Recruiting Report: Dunbar's Devante Wallace commits to High Point - Terps, basketball, football and college recruiting news in the Baltimore area from Matt Bracken - baltimoresun.com

Former Mount assistant Ahmad Dorsett recruited Wallace. Wallace also had interest from the Mount but as a 2011 enrollee it doesn't sound like he ever received an offer.

Mount Athletics to reveal top 20 moments

Mountathletics.com will start their annual recap of the top 20 moments in Mount sports for the 2010-2011 season with a countdown starting today.

I'm wondering what basketball related items will make the list.

My personal thought are that there will be three.

  • The 68-62 win over Savannah State that gave head coach Robert Burke his first win at the Mount
  • Shawn Atupem reaching 1,000 points
  • Jean Cajou reaching 1,000 points
Let me know any others that you think I missed that are worthy of consideration. We'll follow along on www.mountathletics.com and give you our opinions of their selections.

Reflecting on Christian's departure

Reflecting on Christian's departure | Flat Hat News

Here's a little take on Christian moving from W&M to VCU from the William and Mary perspective.

The thing that surprised me the most during this whole process was that folks at W&M were surprised that Christian was considering the move. Forget for a minute that the job brought Christian an approximate 80% pay raise according to the article.

He had the chance to coach for a team that went to the Final Four last year and beat Duke in the NCAA tournament in very recent memory. William and Mary has done well, and is making strides - thanks in large part to Christian - but this seemed like a no brainer to me.

Once the news officially breaks and Jamion gets through the busy recruiting period upcoming we hope to have some thoughts from him on the move.

Anyhow what I was getting at was that sometimes as fans we overvalue the strength of our teams and our own players. An outsider looking in on this sees it as a great move. A Tribe fan sees it as a lateral move.

I'm not even going to think I haven't been guilty of that in the past, just found it funny how it played out here.

Darryl Bruce hired as new Mount assistant

Darryl Bruce has been hired as a new assistant coach for Robert Burke's staff at Mt. St. Mary's.

Bruce is a graduate of DeMatha High School and Towson University who has been a college assistant for the last 20 years. He had plenty of connections to the Mount.

He has recently served as one of Mount graduate Cliff Warren's assistants at Jacksonville University, helping the Dolphins to rebuild themselves into one of the top programs in the Atlantic Sun Conference. He also served on former Mount assistant Kirk Saulny's staff at Howard. He did spend two years at NEC conference member Wagner. In addition, he has been an assistant coach at Hampton, Delaware and Maryland-Eastern Shore.

He obviously brings a wealth of coaching experience and should be just the right mix for the young up and comers who are part of Robert Burke's staff.

Coaching News

While I spent the last day or so tracking down the Jamion Christian to VCU story it appears there is some movement on the coaching staff of Robert Burke that went unnoticed.

I am still trying to track down exactly what has occurred. But I know from reliable sources that there has been at least one change on the coaching staff. Still trying to track down exactly what that is and I will update all of you as I have the news. I wasn't paying attention but back in May, Ahmad Dorsett joined the High Point coaching staff after a 1-year stay at the Mount. I've heard that the Mount has made the hire to replace Dorsett, I've just one or two more square pegs to round out.

We do know that Wagner has filled the spot on it's staff with Scott Smith. Smith previously served as the DBO for Dan Hurley and takes the spot vacated by Luke Murray when he left for Towson.

The quest for information (photos) of Dita Krumberga

We've seen a whole lot of visitors in the last few days looking for information on Jamion Christian and now that he has his job at VCU - we're seeing a lot of activity looking for information on former Mountaineer women's player Dita Krumberga. We're guessing that information they are looking for is actually pictures. So we're starting a new feature at The Fan Blog - the Dita Krumberga photo of the week. You may recall it was this shot on the cover of FHM Latvia that we searched for years for - and finally learned Latvian (Thank you Rosetta Stone) so we could track it down.

With this it's become quite obvious that Krumberga is now an Anna Kournikova-like icon in Latvia. We doubt she'll ever replace Jillian Michaels on The Biggest Loser. But she is hot and there quite an internet collection of photos. You can find them all out there. Or you can take the easy way out - and let the Fan find one for you each Friday morning. It's the perfect way to start your weekend off. Some of them might even be sports related.

So here is the first (and possibly only) Dita Krumberga photo of the week.......

what we first reported

New Kent alum Jamion Christian moving from W&M to VCU as basketball assistant - dailypress.com

Christian to VCU

Jamion Christian will join the VCU coaching staff according to reliable sources of The Fan Blog.

VCU played in the First Four in the NCAA tournament last season and took that berth all the way to the Final Four before losing to Butler in the National Semifinals.

The former Mt. St. Mary's guard will depart William and Mary, where he spent the last three years as an assistant. Prior to that he worked with Pat Flannery at Bucknell.

VCU is a perennial contender for the CAA championship and this seems to be a huge move for the up and coming coach

He was a finalist for the Mount coaching position last summer.

We'll wait for the official announcement and will have more at that time.

Update on the VCU assistant position

Sources are telling The Fan Blog that Jamion Christian has emerged as the favorite for the assistant spot on Shaka Smart's staff at VCU. The spot became available when VCU assistant Mike Jones left for the head coaching position at Radford.

The former Mount guard from New Kent, VA has spent the last three years on the staff at William and Mary. In 2010 Tony Shaver's Tribe made it to the NIT and put a scare into North Carolina at Carmichael Arena. Prior to arriving in Williamsburg, Christian was the Director of Basketball Operations at Bucknell University.

While a Mountaineer, Christian averaged 6.5 points a game. He was a finalist for the head coaching position at the Mount when Milan Brown left for Holy Cross and Robert Burke was named head coach.

Apparently....

There are some rumors floating around about former Mount guard and current William and Mary assistant coach Jamion Christian joining Shaka Smart's staff at Virginia Commonwealth. Several of you have checked in here today to see if we had any news.

So we did what we could do and we found out that there is absolutely nothing to report as of now.
Christian, you may recall, was one of the finalists on the desk of Mount President Thomas Powell last spring before Robert Burke was ultimately hired. He continues to be a name bantered about when head coaching positions open up. In fact, his name up in the Radford coaching search where former VCU assistant Mike Jones was named head coach.

As of right now there is nothing to report. Should that change, we'll let you know.

Golladay's sister Concluding All-American Career

David averaged 5.3 points a game in his first season with the Mount. He's going to have to take it up a notch or two to match the accomplishments of his sister.

Heads or Tails

I'm trying to figure out what is up with the schedule. The only thing confirmed I know is that Loyola is still on the schedule. Jimmy Patsos, our favorite, confirmed that the other day. The Greyhounds also play Coppin, Bucknell, Wake Forest, Kentucky and UMBC.

I'm assuming that Albany is still on the books to return here to the Mount - and I expect the Navy and American series' to continue but they could be coming to an end. I know the Mount was still looking for a like opponent

As of last month the school was still looking to add a game as the start of a series on the weekend before Christmas.

As far as the recruiting goes....it seems like what everybody has said on here is accurate. Holley and Danaher are the only incoming freshman on scholarship, and Sam Prescott a transfer from Marist who averaged double digits and scored 30+ in one game for the Red Foxes will join them, but will have to sit out a season due to transfer rules. Kelvin Parker from York is coming but apparently won't have a scholarship to begin with.

Early commit non-signee Jalen Washington hasn't signed with anyone as far as I can tell. He could be ticketed for the junior college/prep school route.

I wish I had more, but that's about all I can come up with for now.
