I will never forget Valentine's Day night of 2013.
I got in a lot of trouble that night. I chose the Mount game over dinner with my wife.
Sam Prescott made sure that was a wise decision.
At the time a junior, and having broken into the starting lineup only a few weeks prior, he singed the Bryant defense for 44 points knocking down 10 three-pointers on the evening. As far as individual performances at Knott Arena there are few, if any, better. Certainly much better than the steak or crab cake that the other option provided.
But that wasn't the only lasting image I'll have of Prescott. Etched in my mind, and the nightmares of Robert Morris fans everywhere, will be Prescott sitting comfortably in the middle of the Colonial zone, just past the foul line making the proper decision each and every time, either knocking down the 16-foot jumper if nobody stepped forward, or kicking to the wing, the corner or to the baseline depending upon where the help defense came from.
Maybe it was the 2 final second jumpers during his senior season that you'll recall when you think of Prescott's time at the Mount. They were both incredibly memorable shots. The three against Long Island with .3 second left capped about as frantic a final minute (sans SFNY quarterfinal win) of basketball you can have. Or maybe his three to force an extra session of basketball against Fairleigh Dickinson just two nights before was what stands out.
And don't forget the double-double against St. Francis U on Senior Day. He lit up the scoreboard in the second half and then got his 10th rebound just seconds before leaving to a strong ovation.
Or perhaps, you go the whole way back. Back to your first look of Prescott. Mine was the Blue-White game in 2011, during the year he had to sit out because of NCAA transfer rules. He electrified that day. Passed the look test in every way, and as a great basketball mind told me that day, "He excites you".
The fact is Sam Prescott could of scored a lot more points than the 11.1 he averaged with the Mount these past two seasons. Or he could have had a lot more than the 1000+ he totaled in his collegiate career which began with 2 seasons at Marist.
But that wasn't Prescott's role within this team and this system. And he bought into it. Bought in hard and did the things that were necessary to make this team everything it has been the last two seasons. Whether that was matching up against much bigger players on the defensive end and trying (successfully on many occasions) to keep them off the offensive boards, or going out front and guarding the lead guard. Or running through the offense and setting the screens and taking the defense away from the point attack. Prescott did it, and all along with a smile on his face.
There were plenty of individual moments and achievement in Prescott's career and those images will stick. But it was his unselfishness that I'll remember best.
This Mt. St. Mary's program is about to get good. Real good. Sam Prescott's days on the floor are over, but his days as a pillar of this program will never end.
Three claps for you, Sam, on a job well done. Thanks for the memories, and the dedication, they will not be forgotten.

Not all Alums impressed with Athletic Success
I received an email from Bernie Jacobs, Class of 1950 in my inbox yesterday. He wrote again today and asked that I post it for the readers of the Mount FanBlog. So here it is - in the cut and paste form - for all of you to read. The opinions are his own and do not represent the MountFanBlog in any way. The comments section always welcomes your opinions.
I am a graduate of the Mount Class of 1950....in my day the Mount teams were
Winners in the Mason Dixon Conference...I applaud the recent win in the
Basketball title game.....however, I am not too excited about a .500 team going to the
Big dance.
The Mount's claim to fame is winning the Div 2 national basketball title in 1962...
In the mean time we have not excelled in any major sports.
We are losers in Lacrosse....in which, in my opinion, due to our location...the
Heart of Maryland Lacrosse...where many of the Catholic High Schools...excel
In the sport...yet we cannot recruit players who would make us winners.
In academics & facilities the Mount has made tremendous strides and is recognized
As a top-rated liberal arts University. It seems to me that we, students & alums
Should demand the same from the Athletic department and Coaches..if the English
Department had the same performance as the Athletic Department...there would
Be a replacement of those in charge....why do not we expect the same from the
Athletic Department?
I have a winter home in Naples Fl...I saw what effect the FGCU Basketball team
Had on the community and school when they went to the sweet 16 in the NCAA
Tourney.....their games are sold out...the student applications increased by 35%
After they got to be known as"dunk city" and this University has been in existence
For about 10years.
If you as present students accept that the Mount should continue as "losers"
Then so be it....if you alums accept the same fact then we will continue to be
Regarded as "losers" in the 2 major sports... Basketball & Lacrosse...
If you don't want to be a connected with a University that is considered athletic
Team losers then do something...just do not accept being tabbed as "losers"

Streaming Thoughts About the NEC Champions
- I'm about sick already of hearing how this team doesn't deserve to play in the NCAA. This team deserves it. They set the rules a long time ago, and the rules said win the Conference Tournament and you're in. That's decided by the League. The League might not always get it right (see Saturday afternoon only start times). But that's the rule. And if you have ever had the chance to spend some time with Jamion Christian, you will quickly learn, he's got a plan for everything. Do you think there's no explanation why the Mount record in March is 7-1 since Christian starting coaching? If you think that sample size is too small how about 18-6 in February & March? Exactly, when the games matter the most, this team has excelled. And there wasn't a day since last year's championship game, when Christian didn't believe last night's result was in the works.
- With all of that said, I do think the Mount is going to Dayton. Too many times this year, they did let easily attainable wins get away. And it's caused the RPI to stay high because of the win percentage component. Nobody expects the Mount to go 25-5 with the schedule they play. But had they been 20-12 - (you are all smart enough you can find 4 wins) they'd be in the low 100's and a potential 13 or 14 seed. The early season injuries prevented this team from being consistent early and led to some of those losses. But the plan is in place to get this program an NCAA Tournament win beyond the First Round.
- After having no one selected to the All-NEC regular season 1st team, the Mount had 3 on the All-Tournament team. No surprise it was the three seniors. When those three play well, this team is really good. Rashad Whack was sensational in the playoffs. He should have earned the NEC Defender of the Year, but the Tourney MVP title will fit. Norfleet, might in fact be the most valuable player on the team. His ability to shift from the off guard to the lead guard last season was what started all of the this. Prescott sometimes gets shuffled to the side. But he shouldn't. He might be the most important player of the group. He takes on any role he's asked to take on, and he does it with tremendous efficiency.
- Taylor Danaher was the butt of a lot of jokes from some commentors here and other areas of the internet.when he redshirted his freshman year. And even when he's on the floor in Knott Arena, he might hear a thing or two that isn't nice. But the guy has really developed this year. His ability to alter shots at the back end of the defense has been a reason the Mount half court defense has been so much better the last month and a half. And last night his improving offensive game was sensational.
- I've watched a lot of zone defense through the years, (being a Syracuse alum does that). Nobody attacks the zone enough. The Mount which has had a lot of practice versus zone defenses all year, because opponents rarely wanted to try to guard them straight up, was sensational against the zone. Give the credit to Jamion Christian and his staff for designing the game plan and preparing the team, and a ton of credit to the team for execution.
- Not much sweeter if you are a Mount fan, then that picture to the left of the NEC Championship Trophy sitting in the office of Jamion Christian.
