Christian's first Offer
According to VirginiaPreps.com, new Mount basketball coach Jamion Christian extended a scholarship offer to 2013 recruit Malique Trent.
Trent a 6-2 guard averaged nearly 20 points a game, 5 rebounds and 3 assists for Norcom High in the Tidewater Area last season. He plays for Wave Basketball on the AAU Circuit.
He was chosen first team All-Eastern District while leading Norcom in 3-point shooting. He scored 18 points in Norcom's win over Norview for the Eastern District Championship.
Trent also holds an offer from Appalachian State.

Is it October Yet?
I mean seriously. I'm so ready.
If you spend enough time around coaches at any level who understand and know the game that they are about, they'll tell you how difficult it is to repair a program. Usually you'll get a it takes about 5 years to fix what someone can tear apart in one.
But somehow as I watched the Jamion Christian press conference, I felt like all was good in the Mount basketball program again. The confidence and the excitement that Christian brings to the program, as well as a great understanding about what this unique program is all about, has me excited to be a Mount fan again.
I know you can't totally remove the last two years, but man, is everybody sure I didn't just wake up from a really bad nightmare.
And that isn't to say, I expect to Christian to lead the Mount back to the NCAA Tournament in Year 1. But what I do expect is that at noon time of game days, I'm crawling to get out of my seat and get to the ARCC, not deciding whether or not I really want to make the short trip down the road that night.
Because as the legendary Jim Phelan said after the press conference even though its a nice nucleus, the team still has some shortcomings. But what Phelan said, and what I think is really true, is that Christian is going to get them to play better.
He already has me wanting to be a better fan.
And I'm expecting that when I wake up after the next two years, it is going to feel like a dream.

Time to get Excited
The question is no longer if, it's now when? And from all indications the official announcement will come sometime tomorrow, with a press conference sometime after that. But Jamion Christian, a Mount guy to the core, is the head basketball coach.
Christian is a former player and Alum, who has advanced up the coaching ladder since his graduation in 2004. He spent the past season with Shaka Smart at VCU, after assisting at William & Mary and Emory & Henry and serving on the staff at Bucknell.
But he brings so much more than that. He brings a fire and an energy - and a love for a program that truly is special - back to the campus just south of the Mason Dixon Line.
Robert Burke took that away from all of us the last two years. He alienated everyone. The players. The former players. The supporters. The referees. The faculty. The students. Let's be 100% honest, basketball was far from fun in Emmitsburg..
It's Christian's job to restore that. And those people around him, who know him best, think he's just the guy to do it.
Smart, the head coach at VCU who took them from the First Four to the Final Four, highly recommended Christian. Former Mountaineer head coach Milan Brown was also a big supporter during the process.
And the former Mount players who I've been in touch with the last few days can't think of a better guy for the job.
Jason Epps, who was Christian's roommate at the Mount, said many of the past players have been forced to root for Holy Cross or VCU the last two years as the program lost a lot of the basketball alumni support over the past two years. But with this hiring that has already started to return.
"In the past day and a half alone, I've noticed that excitement and support for Mount basketball that was once there, is back. And that's a great thing," Epps wrote. "Jamion is not only a great coach but he's a great person as well. He's going to do an amazing job."
Another former teammate, Gus Durr, is certain that Christian can not only produce on the basketball court but help with some of the issues that have plagued the team off the court in recent memory.
"There is no doubt in my mind that Jamion will be able to lead this program and teach each and every young man the true meaning of being a student athlete. I look forward to an exciting brand of basketball at the Mount for years to come."
One Mount Alum let me know that Christian was the guy who hosted all the recruits on their visits during his senior year so he already has experience recruiting to the Mount. That class included Chris Vann and Markus Mithchell.
Mitchell who now plays professionally for Mayaguez in Puerto Rico is expecting big things from the guy who hosted him on campus years ago.
"Jamion is a young, hungry coach with a great basketball mind and a tremendous work ethic. There is a reason he has climbed up the coaching ladder these past few years, and with an opportunity to be at the forefront, I feel Coach Christian will make everyone from alumni, former players, spectators and most importantly the players under him very proud."
The last two years are history. As a fan base and a community we can move forward, and I for one can tell you that I'm really excited about it. And very excited that a Mount guy named Jamion Christian is at the helm.

Christian to be next Mount Coach
Cbssports.com Jeff Goodman reported just after 11 last night that Mount Saint Mary's has hired MSM graduate Jamion Christian as its next coach.
Multiple sources of The Fan Blog had confirmed the hiring to me earlier Friday evening, with an announcement set for Monday.
Christian was on campus again on Friday and the deal has been agreed upon in principle.
Christian has served on the staffs of Virginia Commonwealth, William and Mary, Bucknell and Emory and Henry since graduating from the Mount.
He comes highly recommended from Shaka Smart, who has led the Rams to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances including the Final Four last season, and former Mountaineer coach Milan Brown.
We'll have more on the hiring as the story develops over the weekend. For now we congratulate Jamion Christian and wish him and the program the best of success in the upcoming years. Fun time to be a Mountaineer fan.

Could this week be the week?
After a relatively slow week (at least as far as news was concerned), we expect (based purely on speculation) that this week could become a little more riveting as far as the Mount head coaching search goes.
We say that for a variety of reasons.
The landscape of coaching openings is much better known now than it was a week ago. The major conferences for the most part, just had conference tournaments last weekend and we saw a bunch of firings occur just this week. Therefore, coaches who are looking for jobs now know which jobs are available and can base decisions on that.
Obviously its not concrete as one hiring tends to lead to another opening, as we are seeing at Wagner right now. And the Wagner situation could obviously have a major impact on the Mount. The Seahawk job, if it opens to the outside coaching community, will be viewed as a better job than the Mount simply because of where the program is at the moment - and also because of 2 of the last 3 head coaches have left for Atlantic-10 jobs. The ladder and how it's climbed becomes a big part of this process.
Also, you can't ignore the fact that there are a lot of schools not playing this week that were playing last week. That opens up the possibility for a lot more individuals to be available in the process.
There seemed to be a lot more information two weeks ago, then there was this past week. I expect that to increase dramatically this week.

An Email I sent to those in my bracket pool about last night
Last
night I tweeted….If you don’t Love March, you’re Unamerican. I mean seriously,
how can you not love a kid telling you “We even messed up my bracket”
And then Lehigh, who will always be the Engineers – how is that more politically uncorrect than MountainHawks, go out and beat the team that really has been the Dynasty of the College Basketball postseason in Duke. They’ve got a guard, CJ McCollum, who likely will be an NBA first rounder, who one of the main sports writers wanted to do a feature on this week. (I think it was ESPN’s Andy Katz) He said he didn’t want hyped up. He wanted his play to do that. So he scored 30 in the first round upset.
Twitter was ablaze, it was like Whitney had died all over again. But the thing I couldn’t figure out was – people were actually upset that their brackets were being ruined. Seriously? OK if you are a Missouri fan, or a Michigan fan, or god forbid a Duke fan – there was a reason to be upset. But if you were American – the drama and excitement of those moments last night was well worth whatever you paid to get into the pool to begin with. (Oh and don’t forget there will be a Sweet 16 pool somewhere you can get into Monday to recoup your losses). But seriously without nights like last night – nobody cares about the brackets anyhow.
The last time I had bracket disgust was when Byron Larkin and the Xavier Musketeers (another higher seeded winner last night) defeated Missouri and the Band-Aid clad Derrick Chevious in the first round from the Hoosier Dome or was it the MetroDome back when I was in junior high. Those were the days the tourney was on ESPN and we didn’t have cable – so I had to rush out of school (yeah they didn’t have early dismissals for the tournament then (and who said our School Board can’t get anything right?)) and run across the street to my grandparents just to tear my bracket up.
But that’s what brought me back. Kids like Byron Larkin.
And it’s what turns non sports fans into NCAA tournament crazies. It’s what makes everybody’s nails a bit shorter this morning. We think it’s we want to win. We think we want to hit the jackpot. The lottery is about the chance of winning millions. The NCAA tournament is about stories. Great stories. Enjoy them.
BTW, (that’s by the way for those of you who don’t Tweet or Text) – Brian Garman Jr, skinsfanz (used to rooting for the underdog) and Akio Toyoda are in the lead.
And also, its themountfanblog if you want to follow.

Fund for new Locker Rooms
Longtime reader and frequent commenter jab mentioned that that University has a plan for new locker rooms for $1 million and suggested that we start a capital campaign right here on The Fan Blog.
Harry then suggested that I keep track of the commitments and pledged $10K over a four-year period.
I'll list all commitments on the left hand side of the page.
For now, I'll put myself on the hook for any ad revenue that this site generates through the clickable banners throughout the page. I'll even go back and check my records and donate the limited money that I've made from this site over the years.

Search for coaching position
Just got word that the Mount has opened up the head coaching position.
They are gathering names now and will bring candidates to campus this week.
Acting head coach Matt Henry is still under consideration but far from a sure thing.

Confirmation of Earlier Information?
Hoopdirt.com is reporting about the Mount coaching situation today....
Strange situation at Mt. St. Mary’s right now. Early word was that interim head coach Matt Henry would not be considered for the job. I’ve now heard from two different people that not only is he in the running, he may actually be the front runner! I’ve heard that he is meeting with the president of the university today or tomorrow, and if he does get hired, and announcement could be made as early as this weekend. I’ll blog about this again as soon as I hear something.

From what I'm hearing right now....
Matt Henry will be the next head basketball coach at Mt. St. Mary's.
Henry reportedly has a scheduled interview with President Thomas Powell later this week and an announcement could be made shortly thereafter.
Henry coached the Mount the final four games of this season after Rob Burke left on administrative leave. Burke has since resigned. Henry and the Mountaineers won two of the final four games completing season sweeps of Fairleigh Dickinson and Bryant. The Mount lost to Monmouth and Central Connecticut State and a chance at the postseason in the final four games.
Henry a graduate of Trinity College in Texas, served as an assistant at Trinity, the Director of Basketball Operations at Georgetown, and the lead assistant for Burke during his two years at the Mount.
As of now, The Fan Blog is unaware of any other scheduled interviews.

Disappearing Post
While in the midst of typing a post earlier this afternoon - and also trying to verify the information within it - from a second source, I had some computer issues where I continuously got a web page not responding error. Apparently at some point the post showed up on the blog and then went away. If I get the second source I will take it from the draft stage that it currently it is in. If I never get the second source, I will hit the delete button when the coach is named.
Those of you who read it - can take it for what its worth. Those of you who didn't - can probably figure it out from the comments. I apologize for any issue that may have been caused by blogger, my internet provider, or my own ineptitude.

Milan had a very poor recruiting class his last year. He would have taken steps backward had he stayed.
Yes the team played hard for Henry those few games, but it was more out of the relief than anything else. Eliminate what happend, Henry doesn't even make the interview list for a D1 head coaching job.
Hopefully the administrators will stay out of the decision process this time and accept the recommendation from the AD and her staff.
Best bet will be a dynamic and energetic assistant at a smaller program with excellent recruiting references and preferably ties to the MD/DC/VA/PA area.

Who replaces Burke?
Still tons of speculation and not a lot of answers at this point. And that seems to be the way the Mount handles things. Doubt we'll know anything concrete until it gets done.
Originally I heard there was a big push for Matt Henry. That seems to be cooling.
The other three finalists when Burke got the job were apparently Pete Strickland, Jamion Christian and Brion Dunlap. Marty Ingelsby and Gary Nottingham (Google that one). Hoopdirt.com is reporting that a lot of the early interest seems to be focusing on George Washington assistant Pete Strickland.
The former Coastal Carolina coach served this past year on Mike Lonergan's staff with the Colonials. Lonergan himself once hoped for the Mount job. Prior to that he was with Sidney Lowe at NC State.
Some other names who may also come up Andy Enfield (head coach at Florida Gulf Coast), Mike Rhoads (Virginia Commonwealth assistant), Chris Harney (St. Mary's head coach), Kurt Kanaskie (Navy assistant), Kevin McGeehan (associate head coach Richmond), Mike McKee (Denver assistant), Duffy Conroy (Milwaukee assistant), Kenny Payne (assistant coach Kentucky), Brad Frederick (Vanderbilt assistant), Mike Farrelly (Niagara assistant - former Mt. St. Mary's assistant), Ben Wilkins (William & Mary assistant), Robert Wilkes (Old Dominion assistant), David Duda (St Joe's assistant), Tom Dickman (Hood head coach), Tony Newsom (Fairfield assistant) and I'm sure over the course of this search there will be a few more that pop up - along with the several I mentioned yesterday.

Update on Burke - Officially resigns
I'm hearing that Robert Burke officially resigned as Mount St. Mary's basketball coach last week and that the situation could resolve itself this week.
EDIT Official release on resignation http://www.mountathletics.com/sports/mbkb/2011-12/releases/20120305vhl6cc
Let's be blatantly honest right here. The Mount needs a Mount guy right now.
Someone who knows the community and knows what it takes to win at this level.
For me there are three legitimate candidates who fit that mold.
Cliff Warren - The Jacksonville head coach and former Mt. St. Mary's point guard and assistant has shown the ability to command a program. Growing up in the DC Metro he recruited Chris McGuthrie and Riley Inge to the Mount. Unfortunately, the move would be a lateral one at best for #5 - and probably a drop on the pay scale which may mean he's not a candidate at all.
Jamion Christian - One of the first recruits to establish the pipeline into Virginia that helped build the Mount back into an NEC contender. The young man is especially bright and is going to be a great head coach someday. No reason that couldn't be at his alma mater. He's worked with three successful programs at Bucknell, William & Mary and now Virginia Commonwealth.
Kevin Robinson - The former Mount assistant followed Milan Brown to Holy Cross but he's lived and breathed Mount basketball all his life. He did a great job helping students be athletes during his time at the Mount and he's been a big part in the recruiting that helped the Mount be so successful during recent years.
The fourth candidate that immediately comes to mind is acting head coach Matt Henry. But upon closer examination you have to really wonder why? The top line on his resume has to be assisting Rob Burke during these disastrous two years, where the Mount went 19-42 posting back to back 20 loss seasons. He wouldn't warrant a job interview at any other program in the country. The argument to keep cohesion within the program isn't a good one. There has been no cohesion since Burke arrived and rumors run rampant that an exodus will occur if Henry is hired. Matt Henry may very well be a fine head basketball coach someday but this just doesn't seem like a good fit by any stretch of the imagination.
So really what we know right now is very little. Rob Burke won't be back. After that it's a muddled mess. That maybe we'll find out more about as the week wears on.
