All for nought

I watched the Northern Illinois - Central Michigan game last night. For most of the football contest, I was pretty sure that CMU would be the match for Ball State. The team that would finally hand Ball there first loss of the year. That was when the Chippewas were busy building a 30-6 lead.

But all of a sudden the game turned.

With about one minute left in the third quarter, the Huskies started a comeback. The scored four times. 3 touchdowns and a game-tying field goal with less than 30 seconds left in the game forced overtime. It truly was one of the most amazing comebacks I'd ever watched. NIU recovered two onside kicks, faked a punt and just totally changed everything in the game around.

But then an interception early in the overtime, kept the Huskies from scoring and the comeback seemed worthless. Central was extremely conservative on its possession but booted the field goal through and got away with the win.

Turns out the two teams - Ball State and Central Michigan do meet next week. They face off on the ESPN networks next Wednesday. I really think that CMU and its star quarterback has a great chance to hand Ball its first loss. If it doesn't happen, we'll have to talk about what to do with Ball State.

But for now, let's hope Central takes care of business and that mess can be avoided.
